Situational Agility: When You’re a Hammer… All You See is a Nail

You know that saying “When you’re a hammer… all you see is a nail.” Or maybe you know the song: “If I had a hammer, I’d hammer in the morning, I’d hammer in the evening…all over this land.” We all can be hammers sometimes. Clinging to our default settings – refusing to flex to the […]

You know that saying “When you’re a hammer… all you see is a nail.”

Or maybe you know the song: “If I had a hammer, I’d hammer in the morning, I’d hammer in the evening…all over this land.”

We all can be hammers sometimes. Clinging to our default settings – refusing to flex to the moment we’re in.

As leaders, we need to be more than just our strengths. We need agility – the ability to adapt and thrive in the face of the unexpected.

We’re navigating a landscape defined by unprecedented change, a technological super cycle where advancements, particularly in biotech, AI, and connected devices, are occurring at a breakneck pace.

We’re also seeing globalization sweeping across industries, unprecedented workforce diversity and relentless competition.

Many have described this moment using the shorthand “VUCA” which stands for:

Volatility: rapid and unpredictable change.

Uncertainty: unforeseen events and issues.

Complexity: intertwined forces and unclear cause-and-effect relationships.

Ambiguity: mixed messages and unclear realities.

In her recent SXSW 2024 talk, Amy Webb argues that for Gen T, the “Transition Generation”, agility is becoming a key competency for leaders, organizations and individuals alike.

Increasingly, it seems, organizations and people—require agility to navigate the work-world.

Leaders need agile teams, but individuals also need to cultivate agility within themselves.

But how do we cultivate agility in a world that is constantly throwing curveballs?
